Key Stage 1

Week Beginning 2nd March 2026

KS1 have been learning about symmetry by investigating how shapes can be divided into two identical halves. They’ve sorted shapes based on whether they are symmetrical, used mirrors to check for matching reflections, and created colourful symmetrical artwork. This has helped them build a strong understanding of how symmetry appears in both mathematical shapes and the world around them. We also completed various problems based around symmetry! Take a look at what we have completed.

Week Beginning Monday 3rd November

This week the children had fun on a welly walk around the school grounds, searching for evidence of Autumn. We discussed the changes they could see such as, the ground being wet and soggy after the rain. Lots of leaves had turned red and brown and fallen off of the trees. They also identified that the days are shorter as it gets dark earlier and that it has started to get colder.

Week beginning Monday 13th October 2025

This week in Key Stage One, we’ve been busy little engineers! Our classrooms transformed into mini workshops as the children explored how to design and build their very own moving vehicles using wheels and axles. We started by learning about how wheels and axles work together to help vehicles move. Then, using a variety of materials—cardboard boxes, wooden dowels, cotton reels, and lots of creativity—the children got hands-on with constructing their own models. They carefully attached axles to their chassis and made sure their wheels could spin freely. It was a brilliant mix of science, design, and problem-solving!

The final vehicles were absolutely amazing! From race cars to delivery vans, each design was unique and showed off the children's imagination and determination. We even had a mini parade to test how well they moved—and they rolled like champions!

Week beginning Monday 29th September 2025

Key Stage 1 have been learning all about Harvest. Why it is important to Christians and how it is celebrated. The children have been working hard, practising songs for our Harvest festival and are looking forward to performing them!

During our 'Jigsaw' PSHE session this week we reminded ourselves of the Hazel Wood School Charter. Jigsaw Jo encouraged us to think about rewards and consequences of following, or not following the charter. He added some objects into his bag that could be used as a reward in and out of school and we discussed whether they were things that we would like or not.

Week beginning Monday 22nd September

Key Stage 1 had great fun making fruit pots this week. Following their designs, the children carefully cut up their chosen fruits, then added it to their pot along with oats and yoghurt. They looked and tasted delicious!

Everyone evaluated their fruit pot after tasting it. Lots of children said that they needed more practice to develop their cutting skills and others suggested different fruits they would use next time they made a fruit pot.

Week Beginning Monday 15th September

Key Stage 1 have had a very busy week. After sequencing pictures from 'The Enormous Turnip',  they retold the story to their friends. The children then wrote their own versions, lots focused on using capital letters and full stops, others extended their sentences with the conjunction 'and', some added more detail and used adjectives.

In Science, the children have been sorting fruits and vegetables and learning the difference between those that grow above and below ground.

Last week the children learnt how to safely cut fruit using either a bridge, claw or fork grip. They then tasted the fruits and chose their favourites. This week the children have designed their own fruit pots with oats and yoghurt. They cant wait to make them!

Week commencing Monday 7th July 2025

We have had a fantastic (yet hot!) week in KS1. We have been working really hard on our Mathematical knowledge, making sure we are confident in using our number bonds to hold us solve mathematical questions. We have been using our knowledge of number bonds to 10, 20, 50 and 100 to help us answer addition and subtraction number sentences. In year 1, we have been using our number bond pairs to add when jumping up to the nearest 10. In year 2, we have been using our knowledge of various number bonds - (20, 50, 100) to find the answers to addition and subtraction number sentences. We have also been partaking in problem solving when needing to find answers in complex questions! Well done KS1, you have absolutely smashed it! :)

Week beginning Monday 1st September 2025

We have been so impressed with how the children have come back into school after the summer holidays! They have settled into their new classes really well, and have been very resilient as they have been learning new routines and expectations. It has been lovely to see them enjoying their new classrooms with their friends, and the teachers are very proud of them all! Next week, we will begin our new topic '5 is the magic number'! - we are very excited to start our new learning.

Week beginning Monday 30th June 2025

Well done to all Key Stage 1 who wrote some beautiful descriptive phrases about lions. The children used adjectives, verbs and adverbs to make their writing interesting. They were able to use ‘ly’ suffixes and linked ideas using conjunctions.

In Mathematics the children have been securing their knowledge and confidence with subtraction. They were able to use pictorial diagrams and concrete apparatus to support them when calculating tricky mathematical problems.

It has been so lovely to hear everything about the children’s new classes and teachers. The Year 2 end of year assembly rehearsals are fully underway. We are all excited to see the final show.

Week beginning Monday 23 June 2025

This week in Design and Technology, our creative crew of young pirates set sail on a hands-on adventure to make their very own pirate badges! The children explored a variety of materials and techniques, including sewing, glueing, stapling, and designing, to bring their badge ideas to life.

Each child began by sketching their own pirate-themed design, thinking carefully about colours, shapes, and symbols that would make their badge stand out. They then used a variety of fabric, buttons, and wool to build their creations, learning how to safely use tools like needles and staplers with adult guidance.

It was fantastic to see the children so engaged, showing perseverance and pride in their work. The activity helped develop fine motor skills, creativity, and confidence in using different materials and joining techniques.

The finished badges were full of character, some fierce, some funny, and all wonderfully unique! Well done to our brilliant buccaneers for their hard work and imagination!

Week beginning Monday 16th June 2025

Wow what a hot week! The summer has definitely arrived. The children have all been stars this week and tried their best despite the heat. In literacy, the children have retold the adventurous tale of Grace Darling's heroic adventures. The children have been fantastic at remembering key facts and information.

In mathematics, the children have been finding and using strategies when adding and subtracting. When adding 11 they have been adding 10 then adding 1. The children have explored different strategies and used them to calculate answers to tricky questions.

Week beginning Monday 12th May 2025

It has been a busy and exciting week in key stage 1. We started the week with our sponsored run, which we all really enjoyed and some of us ran an amazing number of laps. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us!

As part of our Science learning we went on a fabulous trip to Testwood Lakes. We took part in lots of exciting activities such as, pond dipping, bug hunting and identifying and classifying insects. Some of us were even lucky enough to find a Newt!

Back at school we used our sticks that we collected to build our shelters for Miranda, thinking carefully about how to make our structures strong and waterproof!

What a great week we have had!

Week beginning Monday 28th April 2025

Well done Key Stage 1- what a fantastic week! The children have been brilliant at re -writing the middle part of 'Miranda the Castaway' story.  They have used capital letters, full stops, conjunctions and adjectives superbly. Next week, the children will be conducting a Science investigation to see which type of material is best suited to make a roof for their shelters. A big thank you for all the sticks- we will be using them to help construct the structure for the shelter.

Week commencing Monday 22th May 2025

It has been lovely seeing the children back in school this week with a really positive attitude following the Easter break.  This week we have been exploring the story of 'Miranda the Castaway', linked to our new topic. The children loved listening to how she survived on a deserted island and came up with some fantastic questions linked to what they have read.

Week beginning Monday 31st March 2025

All things Easter!

We have had the most egg-celent last week of term!

Firstly, we would like to say thank you to our grown ups for helping us to participate in the Easter Bonnet parade, we had so much fun! We have spent the week learning all about the reason behind Easter. KS1 have been learning about Palm Sunday and the resurrection of Jesus. Each child sequenced the story and then completed a feelings graph depicting different stages of the story. Our next step was to create a comic strip detailing the different events of Palm Sunday, take a look at some examples below. We hope you have an amazing Easter celebrating together.

Week beginning Monday 17th March 2025

This week the children have been working really hard to use their descriptive language to write about Spring using our senses.  We have been exploring exciting vocabulary and adjectives to write expanded noun phrases to make our writing more exciting and engaging. Our teachers were very proud of our resilience and hard work!

Week beginning Monday 10th March 2025

Wow what another fantastic week in Key Stage 1. The children have sprung into Spring with a hop, skip and a jump!

The children have been using their senses to describe a Spring setting. They have also been looking at parts of a plant. During Art, the children used their colour mixing skills from last week to create a beautiful daffodil picture using different tones, textures and shades.

During Mathematics the children have been looking at even and odd numbers, doubling numbers under 20 and solving multiplication problems/questions.

To end the week, the children showed us their creative dance moves on the dance floor. It was lovely seeing them smiling, dancing and being happy with their friends.

A huge well done to all of Key Stage 1 for all their creativity, team work and resilience during this week.

Week beginning Monday 3rd March 2025

We have had a very exciting week in the build up to World Book Day! During our curriculum sessions this week we have been specifically looking at poetry.

We read the poem, I wandered lonely as a cloud by William Wordsworth.  We discussed what different senses the author may have been using when writing the poem.

‘I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.’

We then explored the great outdoors and went on a senses walk, discussing what we could smell, see, feel and hear outside within our school grounds.

This then led us nicely onto our exciting World Book Day. We have all come dressed in the most amazing book characters and have all had an opportunity to explain who we are and why we have chosen that character. We have completed exciting activities within our classrooms related to world book day. We also had the opportunity to choose a teacher and listen to a special story time throughout different places within the school!

Week beginning Monday 25th February 2025

KS1 were welcomed back after half term to a lovely morning of activities that were all Spring themed. Each class spent half an hour taking part in each of the four activities. The children enjoyed spending lots of time outside whilst completing their Spring themed scavenger hunts, we then spent some time digging and weeding the flower beds in preparation for planting and then explored the school grounds looking for the signs and colours of Spring. Finally the children all took part in a Spring themed danced session where we created movements linked to the first shoots of Spring growing and those inevitable Spring showers! We cannot wait to spend the next few weeks discovering all things Spring!

Week beginning Monday 10th February 2025

Over the last few weeks, the children in KS1 have been learning all about pets and animals. The children were brilliant at organising and grouping animals into omnivores, carnivores and herbivores. They also classified the animals into groups such as mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects. During our art lessons, the children manipulated newspaper to create their very own pets. With a dab of glue and a splash of paint, the children’s pets were created! We are all so proud of the amazing effort the children have put into all their learning- well done KS1!

Week beginning Monday 3rd February 2025

This week in KS1 we have been exploring weight. We enjoyed investigating practical ways to understand the weight of 1 Kilogram (Kg) which is equal to 1000 grams. We also compared what objects were lighter or heavier than a book.  We learnt how to use balancing scales in order to understand how we can find out which objects were heavier or lighter, and how we could use them to record weight to the nearest 100 grams.

Week beginning Monday 20th January 2025

This week in KS1, we have been learning all about the Evil Queen from our current topic of Snow White. We have all created a character description for her describing what she looks like and her personality. Some of our descriptions were incredible with really terrifying language allowing the reader to use their imagination to think about what she looks like. We have been using expanded noun phrases and our non-negotiable - of course! Here are some examples of what we have written. "Her filthy fingers are as long as lion claws".  "Her ruby lips are as red as blood and her hair is as black as the midnight sky." Well Done KS1!
